Sports

A swathe of sporting clubs welcome sportspeople of all ages and levels of ability.

All four football codes are played in Temora – Australian Rules, Rugby League, Rugby Union and soccer. This ensures that football plays a big part on the social calendar of the town over winter, with the many quality playing grounds being put to good use each weekend.

The local rugby league movement has been a breeding ground for some of the nation’s top players, with names such as Stimson, Barrett, Reardon, Payten, Hinchcliffe and McCrone all beginning their careers with the local schoolboys club.

In the summer months, cricket comes to the fore with district competitions for both senior and junior players, while Temora also fields teams in a number of representative competitions.
Equestrian sports such as pony club and harness racing remain a strong part of the identity of Temora, and our local paceway holds a number of meetings each year, including the annual Pacers Cup.

The Temora Greyhound Racing Club was established in March 1957 and is still going strong with around 30 race meetings per year.

Temora Recreation Centre is an outstanding sporting venue, having hosted international sporting fixtures in the past.

Local volleyball, basketball and netball competitions are held at the centre’s stadium, as well as walkball competitions for the older users. The centre also boasts a 50 metre swimming pool and solar heated toddlers’ pool in a parkland setting, as well as new 25 metre Indoor Heated Pool.

Another great venue for water sports is Lake Centenary, which caters for a wide range of activities in beautiful surroundings.

Other facilities in the town include our local squash courts and a number of fitness centres.

Temora Dance Centre provides a great way to keep fit and be creative, with adult and children’s classes available across a range of disciplines.

Skateboard and roller blading enthusiasts enjoy the specialist facilities erected in Federal Park in Crowley Street.

Whether you’re looking for a chance to try your competitive side, or just get outside and relax, Temora Golf Club is a great place to visit. The 18 hole golf course is par 71 with watered fairways and grass greens. It is a pleasant, flat course that provides some special challenges for golfers.

Another great social sporting outlet in Temora is bowls, with two bowling clubs in the town – Temora Bowling and Recreation Club and Temora Ex-Services Memorial Bowling Club. Both enjoy excellent greens, friendly club environments and plenty of competitions throughout the year.

Temora and District Sports Council acts as a conduit between the various sporting bodies in the town and runs an annual Temora and District Sportsperson of the Year Awards.
