A volunteer group has enriched the cemeteries of Temora Shire, with members of the Friends of Temora Shire Cemeteries committee providing countless hours of work to ensure the facilities are maintained in excellent condition.
The Friends of Temora Shire Cemeteries is a totally volunteer group formed following a public meeting in August 1997. The group meets onsite (at the old Temora Cemetery) every Wednesday morning (weather permitting) from approximately 9am to 12pm to undertake working bees and helping families who are seeking information and/or completion of research data.
The committee advertises its meetings which are generally on Tuesday morning, on a quarterly basis throughout the year.
While the wider aim has been to preserve our local cemetery heritage, other objectives that have evolved include -
- Beautification of the cemetery grounds and erection of appropriate maps and signage
- Erection of protective fencing
- Establishment of proper and adequate drainage
- Creation of a complete burial identification record, and plot and row marking
- Involvement of the community in annual clean-up days
- Ongoing development of research for enquiries
- Development of a record for public access
- Preparation and distribution of historical information pamphlets
- Establishment of a memorial wall and gates, and;
- Establishment of rest areas and toilet facilities in all shire cemeteries
Friends of Temora Shire Cemeteries also provide memorial wall plaques or metal crosses which can be ordered from the group via the Memorial Wall Order Form, the Metal Cross Order Form or the Plinths Order Form.
